General guide

Common trade terms, explained

Incoterms® rules set out who arranges and pays for each stage of a shipment, and where risk passes from seller to buyer. Here are five you will often see in export quotes.

EXW

Ex Works

The seller makes the goods available at its premises. The buyer arranges almost everything from there.

FOB

Free On Board

The seller clears the goods for export and loads them on the buyer’s vessel. Risk passes once on board.

CFR

Cost and Freight

Like FOB, but the seller also pays sea freight to the destination port. Risk still passes at loading.

CIF

Cost, Insurance & Freight

Like CFR, plus the seller buys minimum insurance cover for the goods during the voyage.

DAP

Delivered at Place

The seller delivers to the named destination, ready for unloading. The buyer handles import clearance.
